Study Overview

InsightRx conducted a detailed brand awareness and reputation mapping study across the micro-markets of Gurgaon to understand how hospitals are perceived by residents across different geographies, income segments, and healthcare needs. The study mapped unaided and aided brand recall, quality and cost perception by specialty, trust drivers, and the competitive reputation landscape — providing a granular intelligence base for a hospital group evaluating its brand positioning and marketing investment strategy in the Gurgaon market.

Brand Recall: Who Owns the Gurgaon Healthcare Mind

Unaided brand recall in Gurgaon's healthcare market is concentrated among three players — Medanta, Fortis Gurugram, and Artemis — who together account for 78% of first-mention recall across the city. However, this aggregate picture masks significant micro-market variation. In the Golf Course Road and DLF Phase 1–5 corridors, recall for these three brands is near-universal. In Sohna Road, New Gurgaon, and the Manesar corridor, recall drops sharply and smaller hospitals — Paras, W Pratiksha, CK Birla — gain significant share of mind. This geographic segmentation of brand recall has direct implications for media planning and community outreach investment.

Specialty-Wise Brand Equity: The Perception Map

One of the most actionable outputs of this study was a specialty-wise brand equity map — showing which hospitals own the quality perception in each clinical specialty across Gurgaon's micro-markets. Medanta's brand equity is strongest in cardiac surgery, oncology, and liver transplant — driven by physician reputation and media visibility. Fortis leads in orthopedics, neurology, and sports medicine. Artemis has carved a strong position in maternity and neonatology in the Golf Course Road corridor. Smaller hospitals show surprising strength in specific micro-markets: W Pratiksha Hospital leads in maternity perception in the Sohna Road corridor, outperforming larger chains on trust and personalized care perception.

The Cost Perception Problem

Perhaps the most strategically significant finding of this study is the pervasiveness of the "unaffordable" cost perception among mid-income Gurgaon residents. Despite the availability of cashless insurance, government schemes, and competitive pricing at several hospitals, 54% of mid-income respondents associate all organized hospitals in Gurgaon with costs beyond their reach. This perception gap — between actual pricing and perceived pricing — is suppressing patient acquisition from a large and growing mid-income segment. Hospitals that address this perception gap through transparent pricing communication, insurance facilitation, and targeted mid-income positioning have a significant untapped opportunity.

The Physician Reputation Effect

The study confirmed what many hospital marketers suspect but rarely quantify: physician reputation drives hospital selection more powerfully than institutional brand. 67% of patients in our survey chose their hospital because of a specific doctor's reputation — not the hospital's brand. This has profound implications for hospital marketing strategy. Investments in physician brand building — doctor profiles, thought leadership content, community health talks, and digital visibility — generate higher patient acquisition ROI than institutional advertising. It also creates a retention risk: hospitals that do not invest in physician satisfaction and retention are vulnerable to patient flow disruption when key doctors move.

Key Findings

  • Unaided brand recall for organized hospitals in Gurgaon is dominated by 3 players — Medanta, Fortis, and Artemis — but recall drops sharply in micro-markets beyond Sector 40 and DLF Phase corridors
  • Quality perception is highly specialty-specific: Medanta leads in cardiac and oncology; Fortis leads in orthopedics and neurology; smaller hospitals outperform on maternity and pediatrics in specific micro-markets
  • Cost perception is the primary barrier to first-time hospital visits: 54% of mid-income residents in Gurgaon associate all organized hospitals with "unaffordable" costs — regardless of actual pricing
  • Trust is built through physician reputation, not hospital brand: 67% of patients chose their hospital based on a specific doctor's reputation rather than the institution's brand
  • Micro-market variation is significant: residents in Sohna Road and New Gurgaon corridors show markedly different hospital preferences and brand perceptions compared to Golf Course Road and Cyber City zones
  • Online reviews and word-of-mouth from neighbors are the top two information sources for hospital selection — ahead of doctor recommendations and advertising
