Study Overview

InsightRx conducted a prescription behavior study for a leading pharma company evaluating therapy adoption patterns in the cardiology segment. The research mapped how cardiologists and GPs make prescribing decisions, what drives brand switching, and how field-force engagement influences prescription behavior.

Prescription Decision Architecture

Our research mapped the full prescription decision architecture for cardiology molecules — from initial awareness through trial to habitual prescribing. The study found that the journey from awareness to first prescription averages 4.2 months for new molecules, with KOL endorsement at CMEs being the single most influential trigger (cited by 71% of cardiologists). Importantly, the research identified a 'prescription inertia' phenomenon: once a physician prescribes a molecule for 3+ consecutive patients, brand switching probability drops by 67% — making early adoption critical for new entrants.

Brand Switching Triggers & Competitive Vulnerability

We identified 6 primary brand switching triggers through our physician panel research: competitor rep visit with clinical data (38%), patient complaint about side effects (29%), price reduction by competitor (24%), formulary change at primary hospital (19%), peer recommendation at CME (17%), and digital content from competitor brand (11%). The research revealed that GPs are significantly more susceptible to switching than cardiologists — a finding that led the client to differentiate their GP and specialist engagement strategies.

Field-Force Effectiveness Assessment

Our field-force effectiveness study benchmarked the client's medical representative performance against two key competitors across 6 cities. The research found significant gaps in digital engagement capability — while 44% of cardiologists under 45 prefer digital detailing, only 12% of the client's field interactions used digital formats. The study also identified 'high-value physician clusters' — groups of 15–20 physicians in each city whose prescription behavior disproportionately influences peers — enabling a targeted engagement strategy.
