Study Overview

InsightRx conducted a consumer behavior and competitive positioning study for a mother & child hospital chain evaluating expansion into Tier 2 cities. The research decoded how families select maternity and pediatric care providers, what service gaps exist in current offerings, and how brand trust is built in this emotionally sensitive segment.

Hospital Selection Drivers in Maternity Care

Our research found that hospital selection in the maternity segment is driven by a distinct hierarchy of factors that differs significantly from general hospital selection. Doctor reputation remains the primary driver (cited by 68% of respondents), but the second and third drivers are uniquely emotional: 'how the hospital made me feel during the first visit' (54%) and 'communication quality of nursing staff' (49%). Clinical outcome data, NABH accreditation, and infrastructure rank lower than expected — a finding that has direct implications for how mother & child hospitals should invest in staff training and patient communication protocols.

Service Gap Perception Research

We mapped patient-perceived service gaps across 12 existing mother & child hospitals in our study cities. The most significant gaps were in post-delivery care continuity (cited by 61% of mothers), lactation support (55%), and mental health support for postpartum conditions (48%). Notably, 70% of respondents were unaware that IVF services were available at their hospital — a brand communication gap, not a service gap. This finding redirected the client's investment from new service development to awareness and communication strategy.

Competitive Brand Equity Analysis

Our brand equity study benchmarked Cloudnine, Motherhood, and regional players across awareness, trial, preference, and loyalty dimensions. Cloudnine leads on brand awareness (82% unaided recall in metros) but shows lower loyalty scores (NPS: 34) compared to regional players with stronger community roots (NPS: 52–61). The research identified a clear positioning gap for a 'trusted community specialist' — a brand that combines clinical credibility with deep local empathy — particularly in Tier 2 cities where national chains have low penetration.

Key Findings

  • India's mother-child healthcare market is growing at 11% CAGR — reaching ₹75.81M by 2033
  • Tier 2 cities show bed shortages of 1–1.5 per 1,000 people, creating significant unmet demand
  • Soft communication quality — empathy, counseling, cultural sensitivity — is the #1 trust driver, ahead of clinical outcomes
  • 30% of rural mothers face access barriers that prevent timely care-seeking
  • IVF, cosmetology, and pediatric dentistry are underserved adjacencies in most existing mother & child hospitals
  • Post-pandemic baby boom has driven 25% increase in premium maternity demand in Tier 1 cities
